President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday officially kicked off the issuance of 60,000 title deeds to coast residents with ceremonies in Kilifi and Mombasa Counties.President Kenyatta cautioned locals against selling their land whose titles they have now finally acquired saying that they should instead use them for farming and business opportunities. And as Abdi Osman reports from Mombasa, political leaders from the region endorsed the president's drive to issue title deeds to coast residents after assurances that the beneficiaries were genuine residents of the area.
The National Lands Commission has revoked the title deed to the Eastleigh Open air market saying the land is a public utility and was fraudulently acquired. For more than a decade 75 year old Grace Wambui would travel to ardhi house, the headquarters of the lands ministry seeking the crucial title and it is during one such visit in May 2014 that she bumped into Lands Cabinet Secretary Charity Ngilu who promised to assist her. Kenya's aging system of land records, which hasn't changed much since colonial times, has made forgery and corruption easier. Whilst land is a contentious issue in Kenya, it seems that there are quite a number of problems arising from private land ownership and as our reporter Maureen Murimi found out, land ownership rights are sometimes neither respected nor protected.
